It may have taken us a month, but we finally made it into Honduras. We are just south of the Guatemalan border right now, in Copan Ruinas, a very small, very busy town about a mile away from the Mayan ruins of Copan. We will hopefully be visiting the ruins tomorrow and heading further south on Tuesday, though that depends on my travelling buddy Chad, who has not been having the best luck with his health on this trip. Last week, it was the flu. This morning, as of about four AM, its one nasty case of Montezuma's Revenge. I feel quite bad for him, though can't help but be happy that it wasn't me who ate that chicken last night....
I've known Chad for well over a decade at this point, and I am glad we are such good friends, because sharing a room with only a curtain separting the "bedroom" from the "bathroom" while a total stranger spends 10 straight hours dry heaving, vomiting, and shitting his brains out would be a bit too much for me to take.
It was hard to tear ourselves away from San Pedro La Laguna, and I was quite sad the day after we left. Our neighbors there, Viktor and Antje, are my favorite people we have met so far on this trip. Meeting people is both the best and worst thing about travelling. Every once in a while you meet people who you get along with so well, and you immediately feel like old friends who just haven't seen each other for a while. But at the end of the day, the week, the month, or however long it may be, somebody eventually has to leave. And with more than an ocean between everybody, it seems unlikely you'll ever see those people again.
And now here we are in Honduras, getting ready to do some quick travelling south before reaching our first stop in Nicaragua, which is the town of Estelli. Estelli, with Leon, was ground zero for the Sandinista revolution, and our first stop will be the Museum of the Martyrs, run by the mothers of fallen revolutionaries.
In other news, my insane bug bites from Tikal have finally cleared up and I am feeling quite well, especially when compared to Chad.
Take Care
